...rear projection TV.Here are some particulars:
Sony Rear Projection KDS-55A2020 - 55" (in bedroom)
Sony Flat Screen LCD KDL-52V4100 - 52" (in family room)I'm no videophile, so no detailed tests.
With both TV's set on "standard" (i.e. Sony defalt) settings, the rear projection TV has a better picture, is easier to watch, and is more enjoyable to watch.
Thought someone might be interested.
Unfortunately, Sony has stopped production of their rear projection models. I'm guessing that their marketing people told them that what consumers really want is something that will hang on the wall. While the flat panel does clean up the family room by hanging on the wall, the most enjoyable and engaging picture is the rear projection.

The rear projectors I viewed also had a great picture, but only from straight on. Off axis viewing started dimming at an alarming rate. Once you were 45 degrees from the axis, the TV just as well had been turned off. Dimming off axis is a huge problem for rear projectors. My Panasonic plasma has no dimming at all, even at extreme angles. Rear projectors first became popular because that was the only way to get a large picture. Now you can get a large image with other flat panel technologies, the bulk of a rear projector is no longer needed. I would not go back to a rear projector now. The new plasmas look very good, indeed. Better than LCD, in my opinion.
Hi there
You wrote that the "flat screen" uses LCD, but neglected to mention what technology the "rear projection" TV uses. It could be CRT, LCD, LCoS/SXRD, or DLP (although I'm not sure if Sony used this). SXRD and CRT can outperform LCD for PQ.
Regards
I bought the Sony SXRD because it looked better than any LCD set, and was VERY close to the Pioneer Elite plasma but 1/2 the price. The Sony XBR widescreen CRT was better only in the black level, but at more than 200lbs for a 34" screen I wanted no part of it.
Baba-Booey to you all!
That way it's easy to move the KV34-XBR910 or 970 anywhere you need it.
With 14 2" ball casters on the bottom it easily rolls on carpet.
