I just received a copy of digital video essentials - HD DVD and it will not load in my Oppo 980H. I was hoping to use it to help tune my Sony 34" CRT HDTV and integrate my speakers a little better. Is it just a bad disc or is it not compatible since the Oppo is just an up-converting DVD player?
Thanks.
Is there a better disc/system available to help me fine-tune my set-up?

There's DVE High Definition for HD DVD (which also comes with the Standard Definition version of DVE) and then there's DVE: HD Basics for HD DVD (very similar, but no Standard Definition version). If you have the latter, your oppo will not play the disc. If you have the former, then your oppo will play the Standard Definition version, but not the HD DVD version.
Your oppo is a Standard Definition player and is not compatible with High Definition discs.
Thanks Joe. I appreciate it. I have the HD version so I will need to get the STD Definition version. See my reply to Racerguy for another question.
Your Oppo will not play the HD DVD format. You need the regular DVD version of Digital Video Essentials, not the HD version.
Thank you.
I feel a bit stupid but here is another question. Since the Oppo upconverts, will the standard definition DVEs disc help me optimize my HDTV? it is a sony XBR960 34" CRT HDTV. The picture is already really nice but I just want to make sure I am getting the best possible outcome with the set-up I have. It uses an HDMI cable direct from the Oppo to the HDTV and the sound uses a digital optical out into my H/K receiver. (The H/k does not have HDMI inputs, only component).

The standard-version DVE can be a very useful tool, even on an HD set. After all, your Oppo player is connected to the set, and it only plays standard DVDs. Improve the TV setup using standard DVE, and you will improve your enjoyment of those standard DVDs. It should also improve your overall enjoyment of other sources, even HD signals from OTA, sat, or cable.
