Well,. I've not lurked around here in quite a while although I pop in here & there when investigating new & interesting things.
On with the quest: I have a friend who has a "theater in a box" setup and the receiver is dieing. I took him out to the box stores and I was afraid to recommend anything not being in the market and not having done any of this type of research recently. (several years) I believe the Denon is a decent product, but I knew noting about the current models they had. I bought the 5700 about 10 years ago and it's been no problem, sounds great, etc.
I did manage to convince him that he ought to just replace the receiver for now, which means he'll need a powered sub as his current sub is driven by the receiver. I lurked here for a few hours today and shot off an email for him to order the HSU STF-2 sub which from all I've read, about the best bang for $349.00 he's gonna get.
Can anyone recommend a decent receiver in the range of $399.00 to say $550.00 (ish)?

I'm also wondering if anyone has had issues getting warranty work done, when the unit was bought at a place that was not an authorized dealer?
Should I put up a new thread with this question?
The Pioneer VSX-918V is a very good value at $349 but even better would be the Onkyo TX-SR606 at $599.
My current HT receiver. Can be found for $500.Great choice on the HSU.I am using the VTF-2 MK 3.For another $50 he could step up to the VTF-1.The variable tuning aids in room placement.
on sale. I have one I use with my computer and with a cheap CD player. It works great, sounds more like 80 watts and has that NAD family sound. Black or as pictured.
If you want surround, this is not. Stereo only but worth looking at, especially at this price...
Denon AVR-789
Below is a link to discussion at AVS Forum. This receiver can be found for around $550 online.
I talked him into ordering the AVR-789, thanks all!
As you can see, should it be needed, any questions on or clarifications for that receiver will have a wealth of support.
okay, I wanted to come back and post my experiences with this receiver so far and tell you about the speakers we put in also. Please note this is NOT in my home so I've personally gotten very little time in with it.
ONCE I learned which buttons on the front of the receiver get you into which part of the setup, I found this to be the easiest way to get in there and get things going on. Great little receiver for a modest or mid-sized home theater. Got it for about $549.00.
Moving on:
This friend was on a budget and I really though he was going to max out under $1000.00 for this project. I'm really glad he trusted me and let me make some decisions for him. I honestly think his turning point was when I told him what just my AVR-5700 cost when it was brand new. His total: system wires, speakers & everything should cost about half of just that one piece's MSRP.
SPEAKERS: Sub & 5 chanel
For this I had to find something that was a THIB in size due to his living room, but would have to shoot myself if it came out sounding that way. I REALLY believe "Small Speakers... small sound".
I personally have not had to buy any gear in many years and what I have works so well, I don;t think I will have to for a few more years,(I've got the itch REAL bad right now though!) so I came back the Asylum to lurk for a while.
I began searching & reading and I was reminded of all the good things I read in the past about HSU Research. I spoke to my friend and he said, "If that's what you think, lets do it". He ordered the Performance 2 speaker "package deal". I have to say that I had NO idea a 350.00 subwoofer could sound like that! I was VERY impressed with it's output volume, DB's and frequency range. So far we have the front 3 speakers hooked up (Ventriloquist turned on) and his old Rat-Shack rears are still in place until he runs new wires for the HSU's sometime this week.
WOW is all I have to say. I may even buy these speakers to replace the speakers in my bedroom, I was impressed that much! The STF-2 would be WAY to much in there so different sub will be in order.
Hey man if you're looking for something small but in your face, I'd recommend trying these speakers. They come with a complete 30 day money-back guarantee if they are not to your liking. I can almost gaurntee you'll keep them though!
