Hello
I have been looking at tvs for the last couple months. Today I went to a home theatre store. The gentleman recommended taking a look at the 5020fd saying it has the same glass as the 111fd but it had less processing power and tweaking options. I will be using the tv in a dark room and I will be using verizon fios.
I realize there a sizable $$ difference. The Panasonic get a lot of good press. How big a difference between the units. Comments, thoughts, advice appreciated
thank you
Frank

Once you've gone down the front-projection path, all TVs (even really, really big ones) look like toys. No matter how good the TV is, it's still a TV, and will never give you the truly immersive experience a front-projection setup can do.
But it feels like overkill to me for watching the Rachel Maddow Show. The Weather Channel or Designed To Sell.
Not veryone has room for one, and sometimes I just want to turn on the TV. Period.
Get both. Use a 50" or larger plasma for non-movie watching and, for the immersive experience, pull the screen down for the projector.
but the price of Front projector bulbs for everyday watching was still cheaper than buying a kickbutt "secondary" flat panel display in the same room.
"the glass is the same"? Well that may be, the image coming through that glass is definitely different. He may have been alluding to the fact that Panasonic will soon be producing Pioneer plasma displays but not yet. There is a very good reason why the Pioneer cost more.
We've had our 151FD Elite for a few months now and the thing still amazes me every time I watch it. My sister in law absolutly hates TV. Sports to her is like the View to me. She sat down in front of that set and watched an entire football game and then a Blueray film. This thing simply sucks you in.

Great displays.
If you'll be watching movies, go with the Kuros. The blacks and shadow detail are superior to anything else I've seen in a flat screen. You will appreciate it on that kind of material. I can tell the difference instantly.
If you don't watch movies, or you don't have the $$s, you won't be unhappy with the Panny, an excellent display. But you won't see the shadow detail you will with the Kuros, if that matters to you.
I can't tell you much about the differences between the Pio Elite and non-Elite models as I haven't compared side by side.
If I could afford it I'd by the TOTL Kuro in a heartbeat.
-------------Call it, friendo.
Technically the Kuro displays are better but you or anyone else would be hard press to tell the difference in real world situations especially if you didn't know which display was which. For the difference in money the Panny would be my choice.
Once properly set up, I found it hard to justify the cost difference between the Pionner vs. the Panasonic. I went with the Panasonic, and have never regretted it.
If you can possibly manage it, go for the Pio Elite. IMO, the differences are NOT small. If budget doesn't allow, go for the Panny - its bang for buck quotient is hard to argue with. But make no mistake about it; the Pio Elites are on a whole nuther level from everything else out there.
I don't know how it is in the U.S., in Canada you cannot compare the Pio Elite side by side with their regular models because they are never sold at the same dealers. The Elites cost quite a lot more than the corresponding non-Elite models. I would *really* like to compare mano a mano and not rely on my imperfect video memory. I do not like this aspect of Pioneer's marketing. I think it should be like this: an Elite dealer is allowed to sell non-Elite, but regular Pio dealers are not allowed to sell Elite. That way an Elite dealer, who are presumably a head above the big-box stores, could demo the advantages of the Elites to our faces instead of just with words.
That said, the top Pannys and all the Pioneers are great displays, it's not like you'd be making a bad decision whichever you choose.
