ok guys , with all the talk about 1080p hdmi and so on! i bought a pioneer bdp 51fd blu ray player. I hooked up via component to a first generation 64 inch pioneer elite rearprojection , HD of course sent the audio out to an anthem avm 20 and acheived awsome results no motion blurs to speak of deep wet blacks and color thats natural and deep.I was considering scraping the old and starting over, but looks like i came out on top by keeping my rearprojection. anyone else find similar results?

I have a Pioneer Elite Pro710HD 64" rear projection, which is probably close to what you have. I did not get the BDP-51FD, but I did get the Pioneer Elite BDP-05FD. This unit has better component output performance than the 51.
I agree that someone misled you. It is illegal to provide 1080i output over component. Even though I have mine set to 1080i, it downconverts to 480 for standard DVD, and leaves it at 1080i for Blu Ray.
There was previously some firmware available for one or two of the Oppo players, which allowed it to do 1080i over component for standard DVD. However, that firmware was not provided by Oppo.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the Blu Ray and the standard DVD performance, and both look great on my 710. I'll keep this TV, until it dies someday.
Yes, similar results. Blu-ray is virtually flawless via component on my Sony RPTV. No issues whatsoever. I am going to miss that TV, as it was replaced with a 60" Pio plasma so that I could have more flexible space for my audio toys. The plasma's not really better, just different, and does a relatively decent job of emulating the good CRT attributes. I will experiment if component input is in fact better than HDMI with BD, many people think it is with some program material in some setups. For DVD I'll likely stick to HDMI so I can upscale if desired, but the component connection will be there JIC. That HDMI input was the other reason (besides space) I changed the display: after watching BD, a lot of DVDs look a bit lame and the upscaling usually does help narrow the gap.
I have an older Sony 1080i CRT RPTV (fully ISF-calibrated) that looks very nice with HD media. I have a 1080i Loewe Aconda 38" widescreen CRT that, when fed HD content, produces a better picture in many ways than my HD LCD TV or 1080p Panasonic plasma.
The only potential fly in the ointment is that content providers have the ability to force a down-rez on component video should they so choose. So far I'm not aware of any that have taken this path, but it's always a possibility.
If you do it over component, the BD player will not upscale regular DVDs. I gather your TV has no HDMI or DVI inputs?

i was told by chris at pioneer it will if you force the out put to 1080i at any rate the results over my denon 5900 where a more cenimatic pressntation and smoother picture with more detail to behold. i'll only use the denon now for cd and sacd play back only.this player rocks. two thumbs up for pioneer.
I have never heard of a Blu-ray player that will upscale DVD over component. It's not allowed. Also, there ARE a very few DVD players that will, but they are not exactly reputable brands, certainly not Pioneer.Your salesperson is mistaken...I know this is so rare you won't believe it, but you'll see when you try it.
Edit: actually, I think ONE Oppo DVD player could do that, and that is a reputable brand.

I don't really know why, except the fear of pirating (?). There are some Chinese players that upscale over component-I have a Neuneo that does, but they are rare. The Oppo does not upscale over component.

Page 25 of your owner's manual, which covers connection via component video cables, says, "DVD-Video or DVD VR format is output at 480/60p"
Forcing output to 1080i won't change that.

For that matter, almost all upsampling optical disc players - DVD or Blu-Ray - are limited to 480p maximum output resolution for DVD output through the component outs. And Blu-Ray output through the component outs is limited to 1080i or 720p. 1080p is not possible for BD playback through the component outs.
In other words, in most players, HDMI is required for full-resolution BD playback or for any upsampling of DVD playback.

with some BD players, such as the PS3. The problem is there are very few displays that will accept it: I know the Pio 141 does, but since it has HDMI anyway...
.
The question i asked him was very specific about upconverting over component and the ansewer was yes and his friends got good results just by forcing 1080i on the output, however the results are in the picture if by some reason its not upconverting ill put it against it any day.Mabe it's because its not 1080p i know there not supposed to, but you would have to see for yourself.
