So this was expected by many.
The question is will they have a firesale or might there be an upward spike in demand at the current MSRP ? I was going to wait a while but if the Kuro plasmas are soon going to disappear forever .....?
If I'm not being too nosey, what did he quote you?
Mike
I'm pretty sure I did not get the best deal so I won't quote the price. I did get it delivered very quickly suggesting dealer wasn't lying when he said his distributor was running out of units. (Normally, he'd pick a more convenient time (say, not Valentine's day) to pick up components from the distributor and delivering large components to the far-away customer (that would be me) soon after; he claims I got the last one.)
It's possible Best Buy will try to lower the price even further to dump the units ASAP because I hear some(/all?) Magnolia stores are disappearing or they may try to stick it to folks desperate to get the last Kuros available. Just for grins, I should check out the Kuro availability again this weekend.
Or it was all a scam to get Kuro sales to spike.....
Even after five months of watching my 151FD I'm still blown away by some of the images it produces. Even though I saved almost $2000 from the Best Buy price, yes, they are expensive. If this is the end then I feel fortunate to own one.
Did Bush kill the world?
Yeah, there is a thread over at www.avsforum.com that stretches to the moon and back three times . . .
This does explain why Pioneer was rather quite at this year's CES show in January regarding their plasma line.
I think there is some overreaction here. Sure the Kuros and Elites were great sets, but they were prohibitively expensive for most consumers.
I think the 2009 Panasonic line up looks rather inviting. To be sure, the Panasonics may not have the "bat cave blacks." Let's get over it and move on. YMMV.
Kuro 50" is the centerpiece.....
She will be sad to learn this news, if these rumors come to pass...
That's what we're paid for, that's what we're paid for here
...the color and greyscale accuracy that those deep blacks facilitate, with the resultant impressive shadow detail - it's the total package, especially the shadow detail, that makes the Kuro displays so stunning. Relatively speaking, the high contrast ratios on the Panasonics provide a subjectively satisfying deep black level, but without the same shadow detail in low light scenes. The Kuro tech, with the blacks, true colors and shadow detail just gets you that much closer to film. So it would be a shame if other plasma produccers e.g. Panasonic would be unable to capitalize on the technology.

The fact that Sharp's ownership in Pioneer may prevent Panasonic (should they want to) from getting Pioneer Kuro-esque technology. I see Sharp as the Japanese Samsung -- and I can't stand Samsung.
