I don't quite understand the misconception that DVDs can't be improved upon. DVD is based on NTSC, a 60 yr old technology that relies on very low resolution. We're a bit beyond that now. Even if you upscale it, you're still adding no real information in the picture.

Well I just now migrated to Blu-ray and Goodfellows is the disk I’ve seen. If it is not an especially good example of Blu-ray potential what is?
Can you give me a few titles that may be viewed as “state of the art”?

I don't know what your musical tastes are, but most of the live concert (all genres) and opera Blu-rays out there are really outstanding, PQ- and AQ-wise. The number of live operas on Blu is still pretty small, but I can strongly recommend the recently released 'Barber of Seville' and 'Carmen', both on Decca. They are truly stunning in all respects; the Rossini, in particular, ranks as one of the best Blu-rays I've seen, technically. (It also helps that the production and performances are stellar.)

I've read in a number of places that perhaps one of if not the best sounding Mahler Symphony 2 recordings is Boulez on HD DVD and of course the performance is outstanding. Knowing you have many recordings of Mahler, I truly wonder how this recording would stack up.
I've heard that, too. I've got it on DVD (which is really good), but if it came out on Blu-ray (which I'm surprised it hasn't yet) I'd get it again....

Casino looks far better than Goodfellas and so does Raging Bull, although it's B&W.
Baraka
The Prestige
Wall-E or Ratatouille
No Country for Old Men
...many more where those came from

Have to agree with you, ... Ratatouille and No Country for Old Men are pretty amazing on Blu Ray.
I'm VERY happy with the format and only wish that I made the move sooner.
Thanks Jazz Inmate
this movie's PQ was horrible on DVD. I would like to see it again on BD if it is that much improved.

I watched this DVD upscaled on on 58-inch plasma, and I thought it was superb, as good as many of the HD satellite programs I watch. It is not as good as BD or the best satellite HD, but certainly vastly better than standard DVD. I went to considerable effort to choose an BD player that does first rate upsampling, as I found they do vary considerably. My Panasonic 55 is the best I have seen so far, though of course I haven't seen them all.
