This is my first post in ages to the TV forum so please forgive me if this is an old subject. We just installed a new Sony Bravia 40 inch TV for a friend and I find that periodically the sound drops out for a second or two. We've had that problem here at home from time to time, but this seems worse. Anyone know what causes that - transmission problems? bad HDMI cable? Any way to deal with it?
Thanks.

It could be lots of things including your suggestion of transmission problems. He needs to try a few things to narrow it down. I would not suspect the HDMI cable since it works fine most of the time but it could be the HDMI interface in one of the pieces of equipment. He could try component cables to see if it makes a difference. If his audio is going to an AVR or pre/pro he could try the TV's speakers to eliminate those components. He could also try the TV with OTA transmission to see it still happens.
Some brands' HDMI doesn't play well with Sony's. Normally you'd get video dropout as well, assuming it's via HDMI.
Maybe check on AVS to see if the "other" HDMI device involved has a known problem with Sony displays. For instance, I know Denon AVRs have this problem. If the device is a cable box or similar, I know many times the volume dropouts are in what's transmitted.
Cable box (high def box) was the culprit. So next time I ask, tell me "cable box." Thanks.
