I have a nice older Onkyo AV receiver that has a "Matrix" setting as well as Dolby, etc. What does this setting actually do? How is the sound coming from the rear speakers processed/changed (if at all)?

In the 70s, analog quadraphonic sound was often delivered in matrix form ... that is four channels were encoded into two stereo channels and then decoded back into four for playback on a regular stereo turntable or tape deck.
These matrix systems used mainly out of phase signals to tell the decoder to direct the sound to the front or rear. Later home theatre receivers often provide a matrix position to simulate multichannel sound from stereo sources ... and they likely still operate on out of phase signals within the stereo source.

But if a two channel recording has no other encoding, does the Matrix mode change the signal delivered in to the rear speakers in any substantive way?
It depends on the source material. Some stereo recordings actually decode better than some matrix quad titles. All you can do is try. Some will do nothing, and some might be pretty cool. No way to tell but to listen.

yes I guess he does not like the matrix mode as well as dolby.back in my quad days I bet I used the matrix mode sometimes,I dont remember.I liked the quad 8 tracks for car & home.I had the pioneer 949.& about 60 quad 8 tracks.I wish I had it today!

also you can see if its a dolby pro logic rec.it is if it has 5 speaker out puts 1 for center channel.the rears are for ambience & sound effects.
multi channel matrix is created from or based on another source. a matrix channel is derived from part or parts from another channel or channels.thats what was read in a book,sorry nothing said about matrix only,but its a start:}

I guess my biggest question is:
When in the "Matrix" mode, how does the signal delivered to the rear speakers differ from that delivered to the front speakers? Is the matrix mode just a signal split or is there some sort of filter, delay or what have you? I'm most interested in what happens during two channel (music) play back.
I dont think its split more like your 2nd answer.I looked up that dictonary on matrix sound.I cant find an answer for stereo playback.
I know there is a HUGE difference between the front and rear speakers when stereo music is played in the Dolby mode, but in the "Matrix" mode, if there is a difference, it's subtle. I'm trying to decide whether to split my signals between two amplifiers (front and rear) prior to the amps or just use the Matrix mode to drive the rear speakers.

I would use the pre out front to the other amp.I use the front& rears pre outs for more speakers.you can try the rears to see what sounds better.I like lots of amps & speakers.not to many people do what we do.your option is having at least 6 speaker play back if you want.I think,
ps Im the guy with the 2 ht onkyos.they were both made the same year so I can fine tune both at the same time with 1 remote:}
