The biggest problem with a site like the AVS forum is that they are heavily bannered and woe befall the poor sap who crosses their bottom line by criticizing a sponsor. When criticism IS allowed for the 'appearance' of fairness, it's usually heavily moderated, restricted in scope, limited to short duration and then locked down so that critical posts will scroll off before the manufacturer gets upset (usually long before production models actually hit the market). If you see an OPPO banner over there, and I'm pretty sure that there is one, then treat the AVS site like live army ordinance. IOW, if you pull the criticism 'pin' in an OPPO thread then mister hand-grenade will no longer be your friend! ;O)

I didn't catch on until I noticed that some pretty IMO inappropriate/irrelevant (in the scheme of things) topics get "stickied". Stickied not too far from the advertisers' banners... After that I started noticing the lockdown of threads that criticise such products too strongly. And the disallowing of links to other sites where these AVS policies are criticised (oops!).
I guess I don't mind too much. I have seen much worse and more limited discussion on numerous other sites, especially where the site owner relies on the site revenue as their sole/main source of income.
Re the original topic: Momitsu has previously had a good rep for their DVD players. This is $150 cheaper than the Oppo is expected to be. I doubt it will be up to the Oppo's overall video standard, but probably still very good. I wish I had more info on how it handles audio formats.
I have decided to setup my disc playing to 3 boxes. CD, BD/DVD, and "the rest". This is a couple fewer than I use now LOL. CD and BD/DVD separate most people here will get. So far, I think most BDPs play DVDs better than most DVDPs...to my eye anyway. "The rest" are non-R1 DVDs, SACD and DVD-A. I'm a bit concerned about my long-term ability to play "the rest" so I want to put less wear and tear on the box that plays them i.e. not use it as my main/daily player. So I will get another Oppo that just plays them (980), and keep it as a legacy player strictly for my peace of mind. My current SACD and DVD-A players have started acting up, and I'm not prepared to ditch the software just yet.
I don't mind if people promote a product on a site -- in moderation -- as long as they don't go over-board. Tell me the good things about your product and fess up if I, or anyone, points out possible problems. Use those points to make your upcoming product better (if it's not out quite yet) or your next offering better.
But in no way should you diss other manufacturers' product, especially if you don't really know anything about it (and I know for a fact that some of the shills do not by their initial posts and incorrect statements about past products). Seriously, if you're gonna be a shill, at least be a good one. Nobody likes a bad shill.
Oppo makes some nice gear. As to why they let their shills sully their reputation, I do not know.
