In Reply to: RE: Nope... I panicked. Bought from my usual dealer who usually gives me a good deal. posted by oscar on April 16, 2009 at 08:53:50
I didn't "panic" because I ordered mine about a month before "the notice". Was in more of a hurry because there had been 1 or 2 price increases in Canada early this year, and I wanted to get one at the old stock price. At that time, and this is weird, the 151 (and 141) was selling for somewhat less than the 6020 locally.
There are supposedly containers of Elites that should be landing around now. Demand is still good though, and probably some backorders. I would expect some good pricing "soon", but I doubt the best pricing right away until pent-up demand is satisfied. When the better new Panny plasma models are in stores, they may become more flexible with Elite pricing...more into the early fall I'd guess. By the end of the year probably even better, because the Elite dealers will obviously be moving to a new line for next year.

to meet expected demand through the remainder of 2009. Pio has said this a few times in press releases, and people have reported distributors saying it too. But of course I don't know the facts, nobody will know for sure until they run out LOL.I just mentioned "fall" because by then all the best '10 model Pannies should be out and established. These are still designs from before so many of the Pio engineers went to Panasonic. I would expect the best of the '11 model Pannies to be pretty comparable to an Elite, IMO their best of '09 (850 series) are already reasonably comparable to the Pio x020 series in PQ.
Edit: I hope you don't think I'm trying to discourage you from getting a 151 NOW! I mean, I did after all... I am not hugely price-sensitive. I figure out how long I'll probably keep something, and amortise the savings over those years and it's usually not huge. For instance, I could have saved $400 on the 151 by going to a dealer I knew nothing about, but I figured I'd keep it for at least 5 years and $80/year was the price I paid for going to a dealer I had a "relationship" with and who provides good service to me. Some would call me a sucker for paying more, but you sometimes pay more for "comfort"...plus I want this dealer to stay in business LOL because they have lots of other brands I like.

I have a new elite plasma 50 inch as well. It replaced the original 1080P Pioneer elite that came out I think 4 years ago. I could not believe the eye popping colors and black levels compared to my old set. It was kind of distracting because of this. Now after having it for a month the colors don't seem to pop as much. Maybe I am use to the set or now it has to be calibrated. Anyone else have a similar situation.
I have not calibrated my 151. It's just me who watches it, so hours accumulate relatively slowly. My dealer has two in his home, one that came pre-cal from factory, and he says there's no noticeable diff to him. There has been some speculation that panels that were pre-calibrated were installed in non-pre-cal'ed models as per model demand. Further fueled by some fussy people who got their 151s cal'ed and noticed no difference whatsoever. This seems most common with the 151 model, as perhaps the 141s (pre-cal'ed) weren't moving at the time. (If you've ever experienced good OTA HDTV, you'll know why people want the ATSC tuner in the 151.)Calibration is something to be wary of for some. Probably not the people here, but you never know. All I can say is, if you do not watch an Elite in the Pure mode, of the stock choices when new, by choice and extreme preference, then ISF calibration is not for you. You just have to read the Elite threads elsewhere to find out that very many people choose Movie or Sport or whatever mode. They want that eyeball-burning color and saturation and brightness and sharpness etc., *that* is why they bought the Elite. Not for quality and accurate color reproduction at all. Video taste varies like audio taste, and ISF calibration is NOT at all about your personal preference.

The calibration for my 151FD did very little as it was quite close to begin with. I'd wait at least two months before having your set calibrated. Do you think you could be having issues with your provider's signal? I tried switching from Comcast to AT&T and the results where drastic.
Frankly I've grown use to the picture quality. It's only when I see other displays that I realize how fortunate I am to have the Elite. Most of the last football seasons games were amazing as well as David Letterman. Still, provider service varies as does filming methods on Blue Ray releases. I find this display somewhat like a great set of speakers, it reveals everything it's fed.
I have comcast and can switch to AT&T if needed. I have not changed the settings since I bought the set, so I think I just got use to it I guess.
I used to gloat over the picture every time I turned it on. Now it's a yawner but my tolerance for other displays suffers.
I'm still debating the merits of a professional calibration. Maybe after another couple of months of break-in.
I'm certainly in no rush, enjoying my 5010 so I can afford to play the waiting game. Actually, after coughing up property taxes, that's about all I can afford so I need to wait at least a month.
