Will a high def TV be capable of using the signal from a rooftop antenna and displaying a high def image?

Seriously. Unfortunately, this is true.
Thanks for the TVFOOL tip. Between this source and a couple of others we should have good reception if our antenna is any good. We receive the analog fine. We switched to cable for the extra stations but we don't watch that much TV. So I'll hook it up tonite. If it works then cancel cable and start netflix.
Hi there
The "high def TV" in question would need to have an ATSC tuner to receive OTA HD. Older "HD ready" TVs do not have this digital tuner.
There should be an on-screen "setup" menu, where you can select a channel scan for analog or digital channels.

On out, you're screwed. I'm 50 miles away with the biggest rooftop antenna and booster I could buy (been after this for 4 years, early adopter you know) but I still get freeze ups and loss of picture.
Good luck.

There's too many variables to put a single, simple distance limitation.
The transmitted power level and where it's directed will affect reception at whatever distance. And then there's elevations, terrain and obstacles to consider. Unless the OP is your neighbor, then your experience does not apply to his situation.Have you visited www.tvfool.com to get the estimated power levels at your location? You can also get an overlay for googlemaps to view reception levels for your area.

Which antenna, booster, and HD receiver are you using?
I once stood on top of my roof, manually turning the antenna by milimeters for that sweet "lock" while someone was watching the TV screen downstairs...
I'm on the wrong side of the hill so half the OTA HD channels are unavailable.
