my PC 's LCD monitor exhibits no such trouble as my Sony BRAVIA KDL-26M4000

No.
My Sony XBR6 was burning 8000 Kelvin out of the box. The days of the Emmy Award winning Trinitron and the close to perfect adjustment settings out of the box are long gone. After a few months of use a professional calibration will go a long way to balance the picture quality and allow your display to live a longer life.
Dark picture reproduction is problematic on any TV that is not properly calibrated. My Samsung lcd does a great job with dark scenes.
Some are better than others. Adjusting the picture settings using a test disc can help a lot.

*Some* LCDs have better contrast than *some* plasmas, so it's not cut and dried between technologies. Price is a fairly good guideline though, for once. With LCDs you pretty much have to compare for yourself, the manufacturers use kind of bogus methods of speccing contrast that is at least as dubious as AVR watt ratings.
