Hello,
I am getting the itch to consider a 50" Samsung Plasma TV.
The 450 series model at Best Buy for about $950.
For years I have kept my 2 Sony 35" XBR CRT TVs because motion
seems so much quicker and smoother on a highend tube TV.
So I have two questions:
1. Has plasma's speed and smoothness of motion caught up to
smoothness of CRT tube based TVs?
2. I only watch DVDs and they look great on my tube TV due to
tube TVs not having a fixed native resolution. Have plasmas
gotten to the point where standard def DVDs look as good as
they do on tube TVs? (I am using a Krell DVD standard)
Thanks for the info..
Follow Ups:
I have a 34-inch Sony XBR CRT in the family room and a 4 year old 42-inch plasma in the basement "entertainment room". Motion blur has never been an issue on the plasma, and it's an old one.
While much better than in the past, motion blur continues to be more of a concern associated with LCD TV's.

The problem is that you may see more of the standard DVD's shortcomings on the bigger screen. Your going to want Blue Ray, room correction, and better connectivity so get ready.
With 50" and up I'd go with a 1080p. Unless you're sitting really close to your display, bigger is better. 50" isn't that big anymroe.
BTW, I have a 34" HD CRT, which I've owned for 7+ years. It's very good, and I love the image, but it's a heavy and impractical beast, especially for a single gal. But it's small for HT.
I will replace it (as soon as I can afford to do so) with a 50" or larger plasma, 1080p. I think the Pannies are the best bang for the buck. There's no motion hang/blur with any decent plasma I've seen in the past few years. That's more of a problem with LCDs, along with the LCD lack of deep blacks and shadow detail compared to CRT and plasma.
Depending on the source, upscaled standard def DVDs can look very good indeed on a 50"-60" screen, which is actually smallish compared to the possibilities with front projection.
I will eventually be purchasing a Blu-Ray, no question. You think you won't be, but I bet you will eventually. It's the best way to see most movies, although I have plenty of DVDs that will probably never be released on BD. One thing that's surprised me is how great classic B&W movies look on BD.
So you have seen SD DVDs look just as good when "upscaled" to a
50" Plasma as they do when played on a Sony XBR tube TV?
A year ago I went into BestBuy and talked them into letting me
connect a store DVD player to a Plasma and the DVD looked soft
and blurry on the Plasma. I was very disappointed and the BestBuy
sales person said that SD DVDs will never look good on a Plasma
due to the lower resolution of DVDs.
At home I have a Krell DVD Standard and a Meridian G98 so I have
top notch DVD players which I would hope have the best scalers
available built in.
Maybe it was a poor player. Or maybe the connection was too low a quality to let the TV upscale? Composite, component or HDMI connection?
I was thinking of a 50" plasma but I am concerned the 50" would
blow up the image of a standard def DVD to the point where it looks
soft (less sharp). Maybe a 42" plasma would look better for 100% DVD
viewing?
Also would a 720P model of either 42" or 50" be better than 1080P
since the native resolution of 720P is closer to the 480P resolution
of DVDs? (IE less upscaling??)
Thanks

Don't worry. I have a 60" screen, and SD DVDs look fine upscaled. Granted, its not as good as HD, but its still good nonetheless.

That would be a HUGE mistake. Do they still sell 720p models? Get 1080p. If you ever get into blu-ray, or get HD broadcasts, you'll end up down rezing them.
Just do it.

We replaced our Sony XBR CRT TV with a Panasonic 50" plasma, and the Panasonic has been great. I dont miss the old CRT at all (and I too held on to it a long time because I am picky about image quality). SD DVDs look almost as good as HD (the Panasonic has a great image processor). I dont know about the processing engine in the Samsung. I have seen 50" Panasonics going for 1k at BB, too. The plasma takes no back seat to CRT's.
Thanks Hornlover..
What model is your 50" Plasma?
Is it 1080P or 720P?
Since I use my TV 100% of the time for Standard Def DVDs,
would the 720P be better since it is closer to the 480P
resolution of DVDs??
When you shopped, did 42" TVs look better with DVDs than 50"?
I am concerned that 50" may blow up 480P DVDs too much and
make them soft looking..
Thanks for the discussion...
I couldnt really compare the different sizes at the store with any level of accuracy, since they were located in different areas. We only watch SD DVDs, since we dont own a Blue Ray yet (Im still waiting for the LOTR series on BR before I get one). SDs look like HD from the distance we sit (about 15' from the 50" Panasonic. At that distance, I dont think you could tell if it was a BR disk or not. Single strands of hair are easily seen on the actors. Ours is 720, which was the norm when we got ours. When I go to BB and see BR disks playing, I dont really notice any difference, unless you get really close to the set. I dont know if the Panasonic is doing any kind of up converting or what, but SD DVDs look great. Even after several years of owning the plasma, Im still amazed at the color fidelity and quality of the image. I did adjust the set for proper calibration (I just googled the setup parameters, and found them on a HT website). At the store, sets are seldom optimized. Out of the box, the picture is too bright and over saturated in color. You will want to get a calibration disk (or google it like I did), and set it up properly. This goes for LCDs, too. I dont remember the model number now, but the new sets are even better.
I would say YES to both in general. I think it's LCDs you're thinking of that (still) have the more obvious motion artifacts, plasmas have generally been free of them for quite some time even at the lower price end (with all silly processing turned off). However I'd be wary of expecting a lower price plasma to match a higher end CRT picture overall, I mean after all it's a Sony CRT...the best panel displays are called "CRT-like" so that should give you an idea. There is no doubt that some lower-priced panels do not do SD DVD very well. I was very concerned with this too. And also how well a panel did B&W (many are not good at all). You should research user comments for the exact model you want, SD ability is not so often discussed by manufacturers promoting HD displays...

Our six year old 34 inch Sony XRB bit the dust two weeks ago so we replaced it with Panasonic plasma (58-800ZU?). Very pleased with the Panasonic no blur nice picture, we wanted an LCD flat screen but found them all to have motion blur to some extent.
