I realize it is a decent blu-ray player but as a gaming system it is vastly inferior to the Xbox 360.If all you are using it for is a player are there not equal or better blu-ray players in the $300-400 range? I paid $279 for my LG BD390 and couldn't be happier.

It's not a "decent" Blu-ray player: it's an excellent Blu-ray player. It is constantly being updated, handles all of the audio and video formats that Blu-ray is capable of delivering at this time and it does so very well. As Abe pointed out, the PS3 is still considered the benchmark to which all other players are compared to. And considering it was introduced in November of 2006, nearly 3 years ago, that's pretty amazing for a piece of "gaming" electronics. Of course, it's nowhere near "just" a piece of gaming electronics. I seriously doubt "anyone" is using it just as a Blu-ray player, considering all of the functions that the PS3 is capable of performing.
As for comparisons to the Xbox 360, that "is" just an opinion. And based on that comment, I'd say you are an Xbox fanboy; hence, the dissing of the PS3 as a game machine.
Sold at a loss just to get those precious game sales. "Real" Blu Ray players have to be sold at a profit which puts them at a huge disadvantage that only now are they becoming able to stand toe to toe with the mighty PS3.
I personally never got one for my HD system because they are too noisy and waste power.

Sony and IBM lose money on every PS3 they sell. Sun makes a small amount on each one from the Java licensing. In any case, there are many examples of the PS3 being used to create supercomputing clusters for scientific research.
Seems they aren't going to include this feature on the upcoming model.
Maybe IBM has other plans for their cell processor and don't want supercomputing hacks taking advantage of it in a $299 box when IBM can charge much more for it one of their servers ??
Seems they are not allowing it in the slimmer model. Also, one of the stories that Engadget is that there is a 250GB version waiting in the wings. We shall see...
Then again, 1TB SATA drives are going for $70 on occassion. Why go to 250GB when you can take the 120GB way beyond? Just buy a 1TB drive and stick it in the 120GB PS3 Slim.
The PS3 is an outstanding blu-ray player and the benchmark by which others are compared against for fast loading times. It's remarkable that they can offer such an outstanding blu-ray machine - AND - it plays games to boot.
As for gaming systems and anything else computer related, I prefer buying almost anything other than Microsoft products. ;-)

Nowhere near outstanding anymore when it comes to picture quality but still good.
Up to a year ago it was the only sensible choice however in my opinion and still has the best build quality, great load times and can be updated.
