Try the Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray player. The MSRP is $299, but you can find it at places like buy.com for <$200 -- including shipping.

Actually, a couple of weeks back I was walking through a "Best Buy" in my area and saw a $100 no-name player that tempted me. Then decided to regroup and do some reading. My online reading led me to the Oppo. But I'm sure the Panasonic, which I probably was at arms length with at Best Buy, would be a good choice also.

My interpretation of your post was that you wanted a good quality player, not necessarily one of the best, but didn't want to spend $500 on a player for Blu-ray/DVD playback. However, after re-reading your post and seeing the additional comments that you made, I guess I misinterpreted what you were looking for. Sorry, my bad.
The oppo is an excellent Blu-ray/DVD player. However, "best bang for the buck" is not a title that can be used to describe it considering what else is available to the consumer and at what cost. The exception is if you compare it to the High-End ($$$$) models from Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, etc for video playback. In this area it equals or beats these costly models. But for analog audio, it gets owned. I may get an oppo Blu-ray player if/when they offer an all-digital model (ie, no analog audio or video outputs). I still have the oppo 983 DVD player, but it'll be gone once I get off my ass and put it up for sale.
I purchased a launch year 60GB PS3 in 2006. It cost me $599 and even today I consider that purchase a valuable investment that has paid for itself in entertainment for me and my family. We have large gatherings at my house on a regular basis and to this day I get a kick out of showing family, friends and invites what the PS3 can do and watching their jaws drop, their eyes get big and listening to the comments this product elicits from the crowd.
Per your original topic (though not wants), it's a no-brainer that the "best bang for the buck" award has to go to the PS3. And it wins this award hands down: there's nothing on the market that can do all of the things it can do and do them well. There may be a few players that equal it or surpass it (by a small margin) in an area or two, but the PS3 beats them handily in many other categories or offers things that these players are just not capable of due to hardware, software or design limitations. No other Blu-ray capable product has had so many updates, improvements and features added to it (for absolutely free, no less!) than the PS3. And now that it is at the price of $299 even with some new hardware features tacked on, it truly is like.no.other product out there.
Would you know of a good online reference that describes the many different uses for the ps3?
I think the general public (myself included) has no idea how to categorize the ps3 other than as a game machine. We might know that it has a very powerful processor, but we won't know how to implement this power except to play ps3 games with it.
