Nearly all Blu-ray players can be used with any television. However, you will only get High Definition resolution with a High Definition television or monitor.
If I understand correctly, HD is 1080i, but BluRay does up to 1080p. So Older HD displays will not show full blu ray quality. I expect that the theoretical difference would be only in motion.
HD (High Definition) is generally meant to be resolutions above 480p. That means 720p, 1080i and 1080p are all "HD". On Blu-ray, there are a few discs encoded at 720p60. Most of the concerts, but not all, are encoded at 1080i60 (there are a few movies at this rate as well). The majority of Blu-ray movies, along with some other material, are encoded at 1080p24. Most of the players will allow you to pick an output to match the resolution and frame rate that is best handled by your display. However, at this time players are not allowed to output 1080p24 via YPbPr: this output is reserved for HDMI or DVI-D. The exception is the PS3 (only) when playing games -- 1080p output is available via YPbPr.
I understand that, but what kind of inputs is needed to get hd? (I have a HD tv.)

Your Sony has 2 component inputs: only one accepts High Definition resolution signals (just 1080i) -- the other one only accepts 480i. Use the top right YPbPr input and set the Blu-ray player to output YPbPr at 1080i.

You will use the component video inputs. 1080i from the BD player should look very good on that display. I used 1080i from a BDP into a Sony RPTV for about a year and was quite pleased with it. I certainly did not "change" because of a PQ issue.
