That graph is hogwash. I dont know what data they used to come up with it, but I find in my experience it is way off. We have a 50" Panasonic plasma, and we sit about 17 feet away from the screen. According to the graph, 480, 720 and 1080 should all look the same, but we can certainly see the difference between 480 SD DVD and Dish network HD (mostly 720). Dont have blue ray yet, waiting for LOTR to come out first!

  Not for "looks different".
  Of course an SD source will look different than an HD source...especially from a broadcast source. And don't forget your panel is always upscaling if the source resolution is less than its native res. So IOW this graph is a bit hard to verify in your own home with regular gear. But I can clearly tell that the detail I can see in a BD when close up is NOT visible when I get a certain farther distance away...that should tell you something, and I think is more what the chart is trying to say: if the detail is too small to see with a given screen size at a given distance, the detail might as well not be there.

    All I'm saying is that I can see increased detail in 720p material over SD DVD 480 material (even when it is 'upscaled'). According to the chart, from the distance I am viewing it from, It should look the same. It doesnt. 720 source material looks sharper and more detailed.

I sit roughly 8-10ft from a 52 inch and 12-13ft from a 100 inch. The 100 inch is 720P.
