Comcast came and installed component cables. No more HDCP error.
I've googled this and lots of complaints; could not find a solution or explanation.

I'd much rather have HDMI than component. My TV got that error, too, but it was solved by rebooting the box. Cable companies are always trying to push component cables, partly because they cause fewer errors than HDMI does in their crappy boxes, and partly because they don't want to hand out HDMI cables when they can hand out cheaper component cables.
