Have been looking into getting a new tv and can't decide between the many options available these days.
The viewing distance will be 10'-12' in a not so bright room. Main reason for getting a new set is for viewing BD and a little bit of cable junk.
Here's the dilemma: 42" 1080p plasma is around the same price as a 50" 720p plasma. Do I want a higher res. or a larger screen? Do I scrape the bottom of the barrel and get a 50" 1080p? What about LCDs? Are they worth their weight in salt? Are vampires always stronger than werewolves?
Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

or can you wait a bit longer?I would wait till after the dismal holiday sales, and you will be able to get that 1080p 50" you are lusting after for maybe a little bit more than the 720p/1080i 42" you were considering.
I have been through plasma/lcd/and back to plasma.....LCD is just horrible to my eyes ( my 2cents), for the price you cannot beat the shadow detail and blacks that a plasma provides. I am not a plasma fanboy. I tried to be objective when I bought the last LCD home, but the wife kept complaining on dark scenes about the lack of shadows and detail,, well you get the picture. I sold it and got my self a nice 50" Panny S1 for ~$750 out the door @ sears about 4 months ago.
If you shop around and like to haggle, you can get some killer deals. Do not be afraid to ask the salesman is that the best they can do on the price.
Now like Jon posted below about the 65" going for the ridiculous prices they are going for now, I am gonna wait and get one to replace the 50" I have....

I wish that were the case, alas, 2009 has been another mediocre year. Wish me luck in 2010, the year of the mongoose.
Looks like prices differences between the U.S. and Canada are even greater than I'd expected. If the S1 you have is the same like posted in the link (1,800 Cdn.), then I'd need a hefty zip-lock bag of savings to afford it.
There are times when I think Santa does not exist.

That is way , waaay to much for that model, including the dollar to cdn exchange rate. I would look elsewhere, or to another model if that is the case.. you should pay about $500 less than that link you provided. Remember, I got a steal/deal on mine.... my price was a fluke/luck & I am sure not too many more sold at that price
Here's a quick link to BB's assortment of Panny's in the 50" range that are significantly cheaper.....including the S1, the U1 looks good for the price, 'cept you can not haggle with BB too much ( they will price match though)
BTW, there's is no VGA input on this model.....just in case your htpc doesn't have a hdmi card.

I am a Canuck in mind, body, and soul. I had ordered the Samsung PN50B530 and it should arrive in a few days, hopefully. That tv looks like it fits my wants and needs and soon I will be going from a 20" crt to a 50" plasma. I have skipped a couple of decades in a short while.

A lot of info for me to follow up on from your posts. I remember the good ol' days of 1 tv sitting all alone at the corner of a multi-level deptartment store with a coat hanger for an antenna and only 1 channel to choose from. I sure don't miss those days.

Mr. Hertz, for a second I thought I had the 720p-1080p in reverse, too, but nah, I had it right. The reason for my comparison is the price of the 2 different tvs is the same. A 720p 42" is about $200 less than the 1080p version and the 720p 50".
I will continue looking for something that doesn't exist and I have high hopes for finding IT.
I've found comparing pic quality at stores to be almost impossible. Whoever sets up TVs for display needs a new pair of spectacles. All the LCDs look like they were coated with oil paints and the plasmas look like they were sprayed with black. I do not blame the manuf. for such lousy pics but the manager of Sears' A/V dept. - Juan Ramirez Escobar.

...pricing aside, if you're considering a 42" then you could probably get away nicely with 720p. On the other hand, if you're considering the larger 50", then I wouldn't recommend anything less than 1080p where the difference between a 50" 720p display would be most readily apparent. In other words, the larger the display, the stronger the case for 1080p.
I would say the ONLY reason to choose 720p in any size is price. It's just not a good resolution choice based on what's available "natively" from sources, both SD and HD. The only exception being 720p HDTV broadcasts, which is also a compromise made for price.Here is some beginning info for the OP. There are some very technical articles here too. Maybe go to page 4 for the quick story. Executive Summary: there is no good technical reason to choose 720p for anything.

42" 1080p vs 50" 720p
At 12', go for the real estate -- 50".
#1 The crappy pictures are due to the manufacturers -- that's the way they ship them from the factory. It's basically a war between the manufacturers for your $, so it becomes a "crank the contrast and color in vivid mode" on the big box battlefield.
FAIL
#2 If the big box stores would take some time to actually do a general calibration with a calibration disc on each display that they unbox (correct mode, Brightness, Contrast, Color, Hue and Sharpness), their customers would get a better idea of how the display performs and all of the displays would be referenced to the same source. Instead, they leave them "as delivered" and hide the remotes. Quality isn't a factor when corporate forces them to pimp displays from whatever manufacturer is giving them the largest price breaks or kickbacks that month.

Actually, I think you have it backward. The choice should be between a 42" 720p and a 50" 1080p. That's where you should be able to see a difference. Frankly, I doubt you could tell much between a 42" 720p or 1080p. But you should be able to see a difference with the larger display, provided you have an appropriate source. Can you audition the displays you're considering side-by-side?.
Basically, an LCD set is better in brighter rooms than a plasma. There's less energy consumption with an LCD. They also run cooler. However, they have a narrower viewing angle than plasmas. The older sets suffered from motion artifacts which have been pretty much eliminated with the new 240Hz displays. My personal preference is still for plasmas. The picture looks more natural to me. And, they're cheaper size-for-size than LCDs. I have a 42" and a 46" Panasonic and I really like them. The picture is comparable to my old Sony 36" hi-def CRT that I had professionally calibrated.
Especially since you are watching bluray, I would go for 1080p.
The other day, I was looking at the latest and greatest locally dimming LED LCD's side by side with 1080p plastmas at Ken Cranes, and really, the plastmas have so much more vibrancy and richness to colors compared to LED/LCD's it was actually kind of sad how everyone seems to be pushing LCD's these days.
I was also shocked to see the 65" Panasonic plasma on sale for like $2500-2600. Or the Samsung 63" plasma. Incredible bargains...
are hard to beat for price/bang for buck ratio....
I currently have a 50" S1 I got for $750 new @ sears..
I am waiting for the 65 inchers to come down a bit and I will move the 50" to the bedroom...
