Since you're using the d/a converters in your player, PCM is the only thing they'll handle. If the disc only has 2.0 PCM and 5.1 PCM as the options, the decoder in the player doesn't have to do anything to the soundtrack's audio (no "language" translating to do) before sending it off to the d/a converters for your analog outputs.
Now, if there are audio options on the disc such as DTS, Dolby Digital or their lossless cousins, the decoder in the player -- if you want analog from that player -- will have to decode the soundtrack in order to present the d/a converters with a "language" that they will understand (which is PCM).
And to answer your question about HDMI, all HDMI receivers can handle up to 6 channels of PCM and some can handle up to 8 channels of PCM. This parameter is usually set up in the player (ie, there's a setting in the player's menu to tell it how many channels are to be output over HDMI).

thanks so if I go the analog route.leave the digital hooked up with bitstream.I should be able to hear both soundtracks by toggling the inputs.
lossless mch analog & regular dts ect sounds with digital.but only hear the 5.1 lossless pcm disc thru analog.Im glad the rush has more options.the 5.1 pcm disc is mariah cary mimi it sounds ok but if I get more discs like that.Ill have to start changing players around.

Lossless is only available through analog (provided your player can decode DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD) or via HDMI in PCM (again, if your player can decode the advanced codecs) or bitstream form (provided your player can bitstream the advanced codecs).
I hooked up the analog outs.It made a huge difference on the mariah cary lossless pcm disc.the only other one I tried was diana krall.it has the dts lossless.there was not that big of a difference.Im using the onkyo tx797 6.1 amp the player is a panasonic bd-a10.dvd audio player, they both have connections for side surrounds.
it was a pain because it replaced my dvd-a changer.Im glad I can switch the sound back to digital.to hear what sounds better.I installed an upgrade disc so it does the new hd sounds.
I have another panny bd 10 but it wont play bd discs.plays all other discs fine.Im hoping for a huge better sound like I got from the cary disc.Itl be fun I got lots of discs to play.
