Can the 5 or 7 speakers making up the audio portion of a home theater go in the ceiling: 3 just in front of seating area and two behind? Plus, maybe one on each side for potentially a 7 speaker hookup. Or, is this a really bad idea?
Why do I ask? We just bought a new home with two ceiling speakers above and just behind seating area (couch) in downstairs family room. I'd replace these speakers with really good in ceiling speakers as well as add more of course. Unfortunately, entire wall where TV will go is all built ins with fireplace in center and spot on right for TV, so really no place for center channel, especially, but other any other bookshelf monitors or in wall speakers as well. And, I don't want free standing speakers crowding floor.
Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I was going to do some sort of good directional speakers in all the spots. I'll call some installers and have them come out possibly. They may have some ideas after seeing the space.
For the best image, you would want the 3 fronts to be on the wall the TV is on or in front of. If they're in the ceiling above the TV, the sound will appear to be coming from above the action on screen... this can be especially distracting with voices, which will most always primarily be in the center channel.
However, if circumstances require you to put them in-ceiling, try to get some speakers that have pivoting tweeters, or a speaker that is like halfway in the ceilng like those Gallo ball speaker mounts... that way you can at least aim the speakers in the right direction.
For starters, if you care about resale and are tearing apart anyway, I would install for 7.1 (even though I think it's a waste). There are extremely few movies out there with 7.1 content enough that I very recently put a splitter off my processors rear output into my amps for my 4 rears. I think for resale value however having them (at least wires in the walls) would be best if it's not a ton of extra work.
As for in-walls, it will be a compromise to some degree. I'd also think placing them up closer to the screen would be best, not just in front of the couch. Try and squeeze for units that have directional tweeters, not units that will end up just pointing down at the floor.
