But do they give as good a picture? I've got a Consumer Reports magazine from a few years back, back when direct-view CRTs, LCD, and plasma coexisted in showrooms. None of the flat-panels they reviewed, at any price, came close to the Sony Wega CRTs in picture quality.
I think the best buy today is a Sony Wega CRT off Craigslist for 1/10 the original price. I suspect it'll outlive many of the flat panels, too.

I had one. It got a wonderful picture but it weighed over 200 lbs and was only 34 inches. My newer Sharp Aquos LCD gets just as good of picture, has a bigger screen and weighs a lot less.
I re-read the Consumer Reports article. The best of the plasmas were nearly as good as the best CRTs. Some LCD RPTVs were pretty good. None of the LCD flat panels came close. However, within types there was a lot of variation: any CRT TV that wasn't also a Sony was not very good.LCDs may have improved since then, but I'd be really wary of buying any display without seeing an objective review of it. There's sets that for whatever reason don't handle horizontal pans properly, for example.

Some friends of mine came into some money a few years back and bought a first generation 52inch LCD TV. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Black is gray, slow display, colors weak and off.
Today's LCD's absolutely toast any standard definition tube TV. Especially with an HD source like Blu Ray.
We'll have to agree to disagree about global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along
yes the picture is a lot better. even the free tv is better. I have one channel thats 1080 w.s. a 720 w.s the others are 480. the wega I have would only do 480 lines. but yes the picture is clear. I use to have direct tv the picture is clearer than other tvs I saw that cost more.
mch dvd-a mch sacd & blu-ray concerts rule.
..Regza. The Sony is 34" , the Toshiba LCD 47".
I always thought the CRT HD picture was the best ever, but after hooking up the Toshiba Regza, I have to admit the Toshiba opicture is better.
The Toshiba is even better on DVD from my Oppo DVD player. Standard def on the tosiba, which I rarely watch , is also much better than on the Sony.
The Sony was $ 1000 dollars 4 years ago, the Toshiba was $ 900.00. Better picture for less money.
Is it better than the Sony CRT?...although LCD is getting better over the years in resolving the black contrast quality, but you have to spend much more than $900.00 to get there.
Plasma on the other hand is almost there or equal in black contrast with the CRT.

I have cable ( Cox Communications ) , and the picture is really good in HD.
I don't see any problem with the Black level.I actually prefer to watch the Toshiba now , rather than the Sony.
At first, when I bought it, I didn't think I would end up that way. But now that it is up...
Also 3 year warranty through Costco and Amex.
