I hooked up my Panasonic Blu-ray and went to the Setup and I got two "fails:"
IP address;
Connection to gateway.
So, my obvious question is: how do I change an IP address? I don't have a router, only a switcher at the junction.
Follow Ups:
Generally speaking, they don't do DHCP. Which means they lack the ability to assign IP addresses to individual devices.
You need a router.

Out of sheer inertest - which router did you get and how is it working out? Are you using it for internet services, Hulu, Amazon OnDemand, etc, or DNLA server too?
Can you describe your internet connection better? Cable or DSL modem connects to what? Should be a router (aka gateway), which ought to dole out an IP address using DHCP, even if there's an ethernet switch or hub between it and the Blu-ray player.
