Hello,
I acquired a Mitsubishi AV receiver used and hooked up my first 5.1, using an optical cable from the Plasma TV as the source. Very nice sound from all 5 channels, sans subwoofer. Then I put a nice 10" alnico driver in a box as a DIY sub and tried to hook it up to the "output to subwoofer" rca mono jack in the AV. I turned subwoofer function on, etc no sound. redid the y cable wiring (from traditional speaker jacks on the sub to the single rca jack on the AV)still no sound. Am I missing something, or maybe the AV is malfunctioning?

The RCA output is at line level and the lash-up sub needs an amp to drive it.

Yes, check Parts Express or similar to add a low cost subwoofer plate amp to add to your DIY sub. One that produces 50 watts should be fine, and they should be in the 50-$75 range.
Modestly priced receivers that come with speakers often have the sub amp built into the receiver. I have a an inexpensive 5.1 Sony set up that way. http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10510551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665061026
But oddly more expensive receivers do not do it that way. They are made to drive a self-powered sub.
The majority of subs are powered and that complements the fact that the majority of AVRs provide line-level outputs for them.
