I have an LG BD550 Blu-Ray play hooked up via an 8 ft HDMI cable to my Sony Bravia flat screen tv. When I play a DVD or BR disc I have to turn the volume on the tv nearly all the way up (80+) in order to hear dialog. Most of the other (non-speaking) sounds are easily audible at lower levels. I've tried using the compression setting (or whatever they call it) on the Sony but it doesn't help much.
When I am watching a program on the tv (w/o using the LG Blu-Ray player) I don't need to crank the volume, Both the dialog and non-verbal audio are audbile at about 35 on the tv's volume scale. This leads me to believe the volume issue is due to the LG player and/or the HDMI cable.
If anyone has any suggestions on addressing this issue, please share. I'd love to hear them!
Thanks,
PdL

Does the LG have a digital volume control? Some players have them, most don't (technically, none should). But if the LG does have one, make sure it is set at max volume.
I have the sony tv too. I tried the volume at 35 for tv. I have an oppo & panasonic with hdmi. both players sound fine with hdmi at 35. the sound is a little louder & clearer in 2 channel. I would try another hdmi player.
mch dvd-a mch sacd & blu-ray concerts rule.
It should not be necessary but you should make a point of selecting the stereo audio tracks on the discs.

Indeed. You can probably set the LG to default to 2-channel sound output. If the LG is sending 5.1 to the TV, but the TV can only accommodate 2-channel, then the center channel (w/ the dialogue) is not being reproduced.
