My old one died and I finally came to terms with the fact that I must accept flat screen. I decided to go for 37in, but which of the following?
All around the same price: Samsung LE37C550 or PHILIPS 37PFL5405 or SONY KDL-37EX500.
Thank you.

Are you trying to fit it into a cabinet?
Bigger really is better these days with DVDs and HD - 40"-42" is where I'd start. You don't save much if anything staying with a 37".
We have a 34" CRT and it's just WAY too small.

My understanding is that most first-time purchasers of flat screen TV's regret that they didn't buy something larger. - Even Consumers Reports said the same thing. Remember that, because of the wider screen format, the height of the screen (and that of people in the picture) may be less than that of some CRT TVs.
My personal preference is a front-projection system, which can be set up for about the same as many medium size LCD panels. Our Sanyo PLV-Z3000 (now replaced by the newer PLZ4000) provides brilliant, crystal clear high-def pictures on a 92-inch screen, including HD TV programming, DVD's, blu-ray, etc. It's "decor friendly" (waf), because the screen is retracted out of the way when not in use.
A disadvantage of the front projectors is that they you may have to dim the room during the day for best viewing. - But then again, you shouldn't be wasting time watching it during the middle of the day often in the first place.
Just a suggestion,
Jim
... no less than 40"; 46" is still good in a cozy room - like a movie screen.
Decide from the picture you like best, but realize some LCD's have more tweakable parameters to optimize picture quality.
For overall juice its Sony for me, though recently Samsung's motion quality has finally improved to equal Sony I think.
(Side note: Prices for > 50" are getting ridiculously affordable now, so a 37" seems way overpriced as you will probably want to dump it sooner than we used to in the age of CRT's.)
I would recommend going up to at least a 42", so you can get a Panasonic Plasma. That is, if you care about picture quality.
chances are you'll be disappointed with your purchase in the long run. Is that what you want?
What's your budget?
Are there any size restrictions (should you need to place it in a cabinet)?
Do you watch in normal to dim lighting or are you one of those people who absolutely has to have every light on in the house?
Are you after quality or will any TV do?
These are questions that will help advisors help you. And, in the long run, give you a better chance of being satisfied with your purchase.
Go bigger!!!!!!!!!!!!
YMMV
