.......I still remember way back in 80's spending hours at blockbusters, and marvelling at the selections of movies.
I never thought this would happen.
What happened?
Follow Ups:
that Dish bought them out. All movies are now 99 cents per night. They're getting rid of inventory. Kodak batteries all sizes are 75 cents a pair is but one example.
Netflix isn't the competition. It's Redbox.

My experience with Blockbuster was never good. I abandoned them decades ago because they could never get their act together. I was often accused of not returning DVDs on time and they tried charging me late fees. I would often have to argue with them and get a manager involved. This happened at more than one Blockbuster location so I stopped renting from them. As far as I am concerned, they deserved their fate.

....I was an avid customer once till early 90's. One time we were late by 30 minutes, and asked the manager whether we would get a break since we were such good customers.
He gave us a condenscending lecture implying we were no good lazy bums asking for freebees.
I never rented from Blockbuster's since then.
They were the only game in town for us and now there is none. Selections for download are skimpy and mail delivery does not fit our lifestyle. From too much local competition to none. It sucks.

I had access to three BB stores in one mile, as the crow flies.
They destroyed every local VHS rental shop, then sat back and didn't innovate. The tried to sell music, both new and used, and that failed miserably. Then the disregarded Netflix until it was too late. They had the resources to establish the same model that Netflix gambled on, but instead tried to drive out rival rental B+M stores. I won't miss Blockbuster.
Baba-Booey to you all!
Good analysis.
If they weren't scared shitless of netflix then they were totally brain dead.
As for now, I just hope Blockbuster by mail stays in business. At a reasonable price and with good service they have all the blu-rays that Netflix is TOO DAMN CHEAP to stock.
I have 24 blu-rays in my Blockbuster queue that are only available at Netflix on dvd.

I wish I had experienced the same good service from Blockbuster's rent-by-mail division.
To my house near Orlando, Florida, it initially took 3-4 days roundtrip to receive a new DVD. About two months after joining, it took 7-10 days. After several weeks of aggravation--communication with Blockbuster did not help--I switched to Netflix, which takes two days, every time.
It took about a week to get my first disc. After that they are 1-2 days every time.
If BB online goes away I'm stuck with no where to rent blu-rays. It sucks. The industry keeps complaining about people not buying dvd's anymore. Well, duh. They should just stop making dvd's and switch to blu-rays.
VHS didn't last long once dvd came out.

Regardless of what Blockbuster says about that. Their blather must be for their (ancient??) stockholders, it certainly doesn't fool their (former) customers. In Canada, BB was actually quite profitable and had quite a lot of cash in the bank too. They just declared bankruptcy a couple weeks ago here, because BB (U.S.) used BB (Canada) as collateral for their debts and BBUS defaulted.
It is an entirely different internet data market in Canada than the U.S., and way more expensive too, so downloading content will probably remain well behind the U.S. (per capita) for quite a while. Partly because of that (the rest is mostly regulation), Netflix and other similar are really just getting started here and have a minimal impact. BBs are still open here (they only closed ~140 so far) and still appear normally busy, least around here. There are other major B&M competitors still operating too, and I bet BB hopes they'll be bought in entirety by them.
Way more than you asked, but just backing up that the cost/availability of downloading content in two "similar" markets affects B&M movie rental viability. Regardless of what BB says... (can you tell I have a beef with them?...a bunch of credit that I don't know if I'll ever see...not a good idea to wipe regular customers' credit IMO, but law may not be flexible on that??)
