Does the subtitle shift key not move the subs enough? With my TV they can be moved from about the middle of the screen to completely "below", in general. Should be enough, unless you are using an AR-controlled type of setup with a PJ, though I thought the Oppo had some features to compensate for that?Yup, you don't get the BD all-region with this. At the time the patch came out, when the 83 was new, many Oppo buyers/owners would have had other-region DVDs, but probably not other-region BDs yet, so it was a major help. IIRC the 83 was the first Oppo ever that wasn't all-region.
[I was NOT talking about the firmware "hack". I hope that's clear. The hack does give all-region BD too. The hack will usually break whenever FW changes, I've never tried it though, I have all-region BDP already so no reason. However, the 83 is very good with DVD, and the software patch allows you to use its great DVD capability.]

I didn't know there was a subtitle shift function. The Oppo has that? I'll have to play around with that.
O waited until there was a hardware pact for the Oppo. I had one of their DVD players, but didn't have room for another box under my TV.
Yes, the 83 came without all region ability-the powers that be in the BDA (read Sony) wouldn't let them do it. What's funny, is that part of the hardware hack/patch plugs into an empty socket who's sole purpose appears to be used by said hardware.

Yes, you can shift player-generated subs directly with the remote, or via the Setup menu too.
This feature and many others probably aren't in your paper manual, only the online one, so easy to miss. They were added in the first really big FW update after all the "important small stuff" had been taken care of.
