Are you sure you aren't being bothered by the preamp of the Onkyo? They aren't that great, though they do sound better than most under $1000 receivers I have heard, and I find them more than acceptable for watching videos. I simply use my main amp for front R&L and the Onkyo amps for the center and rear, where it does a reasonable job. If you have access to your main amps from the Onkyo preamp, you might just try that hybrid before you lay out any money for additional amps. I get to my main amps through a processor bypass on my audio preamp. I've never heard better or even equal movie sound in any theater I've been in.

See if you can find a deal on a Parasound 855 or 1205 amp. Either would be a nice upgrade to amps in a receiver
Yes I do suspect that too.
Are you using the A/V receiver's pre-out to your main amp AND switch to the A/V receiver's "processor bypass" (pure or direct in my case). If so, would'nt that negate the other processor options like "theater" or "panoramic" features of the receiver?
OR did you insert another "audio preamp" in your system? If so, where?
I did try connecting the receiver's pre-out to my Harman Kardon 930 (very musical vintage stereo receiver), and it actually sounded worse. I actually enjoyed movies and music videos much better when using the HK as a two channel HT.
You're spot on on your observation about the receiver sounding better for HT. But to be honest, it just was not as involving as using the HK by itself.
If I understand you correctly, I'm better off buying a better stereo amp than a mediocre 5 channel amp. Is that right?
Thanks for your comment
I go from the Onkyo 709 L, R preamp out to my stereo preamp, an Audio Research LS-27. That preamp has a processor setting that passes the signal along at unity gain; the signal does go through the ARC electronics, though. The output of the ARC preamp goes directly to my ARC VS 115 amp and then to my L,R speakers, Vandersteen 5's. Gain is set by the Onkyo, whose own amps outputs to the center and L,R surround speakers. The Onkyo is set whatever way you want it, though I use it with no speacial effects, just direct. I found that DVD's contain all the special effects I need.
I'm suggesting that if you have a way of getting the Onkyo L,R preamp out into your stereo amp, then you wouldn't even need another amp. It's a question of whether your stereo preamp allows for this. You could always go into some high-level input and set the volume of that unit to some convenient place, using the Onkyo as your master volume.
I hope that's clearer!
