Whatever brand you get consider how well it will coordinate with your TV and Home Theater system.I recently put together an all Sony system (TV, HT, 3D BRDVD)for my 90 year old mother with one of the primary considerations being simplicity of operation (i.e. keeping the number of remotes and complexity to a minimum).
The Sony components do an excellent job of talking to one another -- keeping operation simple. I suspect Samsung may have similar options. Also I think (although I don't know because I don't follow the latest in video) there may be some developing standards to get components of different brands to talk to one another. Anyway, before purchase you may wish to consider how well your chosen components will coordinate.
Also, as suggested below getting WiFi built-in (not just WiFi capable) on the BRDVD player is a useful low cost option. And I'm also of the opinion it is hard to buy too large of a screen for HD TV.

My biggest complaint about players of all sorts is that they display next to nothing useful on their LED/LCD displays, making the user go through multiple menus on-screen, and that nearly everything has to be done via the remote - even basic things like track selection.
I love informative displays and physical buttons! They're so helpful and convenient!
:)
The above is correct, especially in the case of Samsung (which I own). The Samsung BD-D6500 0r 6700 are superb looking and sounding players when used with Samsung HDTVs.
This TV is for my upstairs system and it will only accommodate a 40 inch screen. It is replacing a 32 inch one.

I'm not a fan of 3D, but when we set up the system for my mom, to get started we purchased "IMax Space Station 3D", a cinematic visit to the exterior and interior of the space station narrated by Tom Hanks.
It's visually stunning and I think good use of the 3D format in that you don't feel you are watching a 3D movie for the gimmicks.
