generally I would suggest going plasma if the TV is used in a low ambient light setting or fully darkened room. But one of the LED-lit LCD units might be the better choice under higher ambient light situations.

Light from a window is not an issue in the room where it will go. That said, they also want to consider an LED/LCD flat screen. I am just now heading to C-NET to research.
Unless you are going to use the set outside, a plasma will have plenty of brightness.
Plasma sets are very shiny. If you don't use them in a room that's dimmed, they will reflect everything around you constantly. In a bright room, an LCD or LED set is watchable all the time.
Its not the problem people make it out to be. We have ours in the family room with a sliding glass door directly opposite the TV. We have bright light on the west facing patio during the day. With the set off, you do indeed notice the reflections from the patio, but with the set on, it is hardly noticeable. Of course, at night, with no reflections at all, its that much better.
If you buy a cheap model...yes it will glare at you. I have a 52" Panasonic Veira in our master bedroom that has a french door opening into a balcony, glaring/reflection is not an issue at all when watching movies on daylight.

I also agree, that brightness thing is way over rated.
