Not a movie, home theater kind of family but still need one in the house. I wonder how is Panasonic plasma holding nowadays? Are they any good?
Last evening, I was at one of the big chain store, the loud & lousy artificial digital sound, images from wall of TVs, "try to be helpful" saleperson was all over me. It was a horrible experience. I guess I am getting old and so far behind with the midstream technology.

List price is only $11k. Should be a major upgrade from your old 19" TV.

I own three Panasonic Viera Plasma sets, 42, 50 and 65 inches, and love them.

??
go a long way in getting useful info, as would room and usage considerations.
Sorry to read that. My 20 year old Sony Trinitron 19" is still going strong (on a surge suppressor). You didn't say what happened to the Panasonic. What happened?
I wish I could read other replies as I write this reply.
In lay terms, one of the end product failure modes is component "robustness". For example, you can buy transformers that can just barely handle the job, or you can buy transformers that can easily handle the job. Robustness. Know what I'm sayin'?
I do still prefer the Plasma sets for their natural look, but they have a relatively short life and they are heavy. My 60" Pioneer took two guys to hang. The LCDs are easier to hang and are reputed to last a very long time. If you intend to repeat your 19 year attachment I recommend buying a great closeout deal on last year's LCD from any of the top brands that you like the looks of. There are few secrets in this industry and a lot of shared internals. No sense to spend full retail for this year's model when the new shine is only 1/19th of the total experience. Flat screens go out of date as fast as a PC but they last longer.
...but they have a relatively short life...
Where did you get this info from? Our 5 year old Panasonic plasma has been great, no problems, and it is used a lot. I haven't heard of any problems from anyone. So far, they seem to last as long as any LCD type.
I've got them all, plasma, LCD and LED. IMO, the Panasonic Plasmas are the best bang for the buck and have the most natural picture. The downside is that the screens are more reflective. If you've got windows opposite the TV, it's annoying, not that LEDs aren't reflective, just not as bad.
...Panasonic plasma TV. The shiny screen is the only disadvantage, but the picture is lovely. Be sure to try difference cables as these sets will show you the differences. With regards to HDMI, we found the Monster M series (THX certified, FWIW) to be superior to Audioquest of the same price.
I too did not change til the CRT set started acting up.

I have a 50" Panasonic plasma set that's been in use since 2006 with never a hint of trouble, and believe me in my household it gets used ....a whole bunch!
I much prefer plasma to any type of LCD/LED set because plasma provides a lot more latitude in viewing the screen at more acute angles than does any of the LCD sets that I've looked at.
I will buy another Panasonic plasma set when the time comes unless something revolutionary is introduced in the interim.
It really depends on what you plan to spend. Plasma has become the more budget oriented option. I have had both Panasonic and Samsung plasma TV's are they were both pretty good. The new LED backlit LCD panels have overtaken the plasma in terms of absolute quality, but at a much higher price.
The worst flat panel is still going to be far and away better than a 19 years old CRT anything. If you plan to keep your next TV for 19 years, avoid off brands. They all die within 5 years.

I dont agree. While the new LCD sets have improved a lot over the last 10 years, plasma still beats them in image quality. Check what the better review sites on the internet say. They seem to agree.
