There are several on amazon for between $50 and $60. I read the good reviews on the Pannasonic bdt220 and its very fast loading and 3D (Amazon price is $110 w/free shipping and no tax). The money saved with a $60 machine could buy the first 3 years of Breaking bad. I dunno.
Follow Ups:
I bought Walmart's "Seiki" BD660, which occasionally goes on sale for $48, but the regular price is $78. It can be made region-free for DVD and the Blu-ray region can be changed at will. It plays mkv and avi video files off discs or USB drives; audio seems to be limited to mp3 (definitely not flac). Tragically, the USB port is inconveniently located on the back panel.
I've got no complaints about its Blu-ray or upscaled DVD playback, but I only have a 720p TV and pre-HDMI receiver. It has a single-frame forward button, but no single-frame reverse ability. It's certainly good enough for casual use, and enormously better than a blank screen if you need to watch foreign DVDs or Blu-rays.
HDMI connection for video and audio is great. Go ahead and get it, you'll be pleasantly surprised...

Those $50 players are used. New ones start at $78 or so and the cheapest ones might also be the least desirable (maybe).
an $80 Sony blue ray and it was excellent. Hooked up to wi fi, the picture was better than directly routed to the TV set, probably because the Sony unit has line doubling. Sound is not to audiophile standards, but it wasn't bad at all considering the price.

No complaints yet from the giftees. I've seen one in action and it does a fine job. No HT audio hookup so all I heard was TV speaker sound. Cost, IIRC, was about $70 each.
