If you want a streaming media player with good picture quality I would look at ROKU and AppleTV. Not sure if either does HULA. Both will communicate with your PC for music streaming but none of these streamers will allow you to surf the web through your computer.
On the other hand, Boxee Box does act like a browser in that it can find movies, tv shows, music, videos, etc. on the internet or on your PC, interfaces with Facebook, Twitter, Flickr..., has hundreds of apps and more. Not sure if it does HULA. It also cost more than the others but is still quite affordable.
You mention that you have a Panasonic plasma TV, most TV's, AV/R's and Blue Ray players will stream Netflicks (some HULA) and many other pay-per-view services.
Follow Ups:
Most of the 2012 TVs did not directly stream Netfix, or anything. Many of the larger top of the line TVs did, but many did not. One brand claimed to, but the fine print said you had to buy a separate accessory to do so. Eventually, most/all will, but not yet.

I forgot to look for that when I bought it.
Thanks for the info
The AppleTV (grabs your wifi; the TV does not need to internet-enabled) does Netflix, Hulu, etc., has 1080p output, and can wirelessly receive a video stream from your Mac, iPhone, iPad, etc. via Airplay Mirroring. Does a whole lot more, and is $99 at the Apple Store.
