I narrowed it down to these two, but I'm going blind reading conflicting on-line reviews on their wi-fi performance and interface for both of these models. My main interest is BR disk play augmented by Netflix on wi-fi. I get about 3.5mb/sec on DSL...fast enough? I'm not too concerned about 3D but if I might as well have the capability for the next TV.I'm no longer puzzled about how how an enlightened Germany was turned to embrace the Nazis

I picked up a Sony 590, it was a breeze to set up and wireless works great, and if I say it's easy, trust me, it must be if I set it up. I use the Clear wireless internet and the modem is downstairs from the 590. PQ seems to be good with my Toshiba 46' LED. I was astounded by this thing considering it's low cost. I am normally not a Sony fan, based on some past experience but this unit so far is winning me over.
I know what you mean by the online reviews, they had me almost afraid to buy any new BDP.
You get dual HDMI output, which can come in real handy, one to your TV for just plain viewing, the second to the sound system for serious movie watching.
Also it has a dual core processor so it loads movies MUCH faster. This is a chronic problem with Sony's that they finally addressed with the S790.
Also the interface is cleaned up over earlier versions for better Netflix selections etc. The Wireless Network works great. However, I have cable, so your DSL may not be good enough. You get what you pay for.
Also it has upconversion to 4K resolution. Though now virtually no one has a 4K TV, it does indicate the S790 has a quality upconvertor. It does, DVD's look practically as good as Blu Rays.

does the sound match the panny?
The "sound" is a high speed heavily encoded digital signal that bears no relation to analog signals. It is totally dependent on the decoding equipment.
