ve sells for $39.
best buy is willing to throw in isf calibration on the plasma i've got my eye on for $100 -- they normally charge $200 for that service.
i think i can beat best buy's price by a small margin elsewhere, but i doubt i can see myself paying $200 for isf calibration.
will ve be enough?

I don't know if best buy is really equipped to do a pro ISF calibration. VE will do the basics, which will be ok for most of the masses. The easiest thing to do is go to AVSforum, and search for a thread of your TV model. Someone will most likely post the settings from a pro calibration for your set. It won't be perfect, due to different room lighting and such, but it will be very close. One can then tweak it if needed.

PS I have VE, and have used it's grey scale for fine tuning the settings. It works well for that.
Their guys attend the ISF school just like all the others do. And they use good equipment. Most of their ISF guys do only that day-in and day-out.
Of course, the quality level varies based upon the experience of the calibrator. But this is true for all types of professional certs. Would the avg. BestBuy guy be better than a real pro who has been doing it for decades? Probably not. But the old pros generally charge $350+ as opposed to $200-300 for BB...

Make that "well thought of" set. Anyway, I found another site that had settings for my 65", I believe you can plug in yer model numer and get settings. Not sure if these guys really get deep into the settings tho.

didn't even think about the quality of best buy's isf calibration.
i'll go check out avs forum. as a general rule, they know more stuff there than i want to know. but if it's as simple as mimicking someone else's posted calibration settings, i might be able to handle it.

...mimicking someone else's settings on your TV. Been there and done that and my results were disappointing. Skip Best Buy's so-called ISF calibration unless you can get a tech that's certified. Otherwise, get the Video Essentials disc. Probably all you need. (By the way, if you want to get a REAL ISF calibration, see if you can still get hold of Seth Schnaibel at AVS Consulting. He did a Sony for me and the results were fabulous. The bad news is it's going to cost about $300).
If the settings were done by a real ISF certified guy, they should be close, unless the room lighting is WAY different. Most are set for dark or semi-dark rooms. Yes, $300 sounds about right. This requires a lot of expensive equipment, and several hours of time. I have several calibrating discs including VE, and the numbers I got from AVS are much more nuanced and detailed than I could ever get from them. The discs will only go so far.
But, as they say, YMMV.

...means they adjust color, tint, sharpness, contrast, and brightness. All stuff the user should be able to do with a little patience, even without a disc. A true ISF calibration means getting "behind the scene" to the set-up menu. This is inaccessible to guys like us without Panasonic's access code. If one does manage to get in, without the proper understanding and equipment, things could REALLY get messed up!
BB does a standard ISF calibration via the set's Service Menu. And they have the proper gear to do a proper calibration...They would NOT be able to call it an ISF calibration if they didn't do so.

Please read the last four words of my subject line. I read several posts on the AVS forum and they all said BB's procedure was as I stated. Now if that's not correct, then good for BB. If they do a real ISF calibration for $300, then that's fair and I have no problem being set straight.
the war department is already so far up my rear end on the cost of this little project that i can see her roots.
i'm at $4200, all in, all done, tax + shipping for the tv, receiver, dvd player, and a calibration disc.
i try to negotiate, but she's been pretty clear with me on the concept that she's not going a penny more.
i'm trying to explain to her that i've got all this ttly cool stuff i can sell on a'gon that ppl will ttly buy -- just trust me!
she's like, yeah, go kill yourself.
things are tense.
totally packed with shit from some home joint or another, if that wasn't bad enuf, she said, you gotta go to Home Goods, they're holding a rug and cabinet I couldn't fit in the Infiniti. As God is my witness, I swear I thought we were done buying rugs a year ago. Didn't realize we needed an 8x10 in the f@#*ing breakfast nook.
