I have noticed a couple of these units up for sale recently for what is considered to be way below their blue book value. I saw two units on Audiogon listed for between $800 and $900, and even those prices were negotiable. I have always been interested in this unit, and at these prices, its very tempting to take the plunge, but I'm curious. Is there an issue with this unit, or is the new technology that far advanced. I read that this unit does not decode codecs. Could that be it?
Follow Ups:
The word "codec" is short for compression/decompression. If it didn't "decode codecs", then it couldn't handle DTS or Dolby Digital. It would be kind of useless for a 2006/2007 product since Dolby Digital was available for DVDs in 1997 and DTS a few years later.
Perhaps you meant to say "decode the new lossless codecs"? If that's the case, then no, it doesn't handle codecs such as DTS Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD in their intended form.
Thanks for your response, but this is what I am referring to:
"I think the Anthem rep was suggesting the 6 channel because the AVM 40 does not decode the Blue Ray HD codecs
The correct thing to do here would be to use the HDMI and set your Pioneer BDP-09 to decode the HD audio and send it out as LPCM not Bitstream as the Anthem AVM 40 does not decode the Blue Ray HD audio codecs."
So, again I ask, could this be the reason for the considerably low resale value, or are there some other issues with this unit. Im thinking that if I can run the AVM 40 with an Oppo 103, and let the Oppo handle all the audio and video processing, and let the Anthem handle audio and switching duties for my system. Would that be a good option from a performance and functional standpoint?
No problems with them at all! infact they are one of the most solid pre/pros around I had an AVM 20v2 (AvM30)with my 95 and it was an outstanding setup! I say go for it at those prices as my avm is now boxed up as I decide to sell or keep it, as I still feel its a well done piece or gear!
To find out if there are issues with this pre/pro, you may do better searching at AVS Forum. But as for the audio, this Anthem should be able to handle the multichannel PCM signal from the oppo.
Typo: I meant to say "handle audio and video switching for my system.
