The 3D cousin to the manufacturer's 2D offering has to be able to handle a higher workload.
By the way, don't ask the movie industry "How's that 3D crap workin' out for ya?", 'cause as I understand it, their counseling isn't going so well. It's been an epic fial.

I've wondered about this, whether somewhat higher parts quality in certain areas, or "the ability to handle a higher workload" actually makes a difference that you can see.
If you're the type of person who sets up the source for the best possible output, calibrates the display to the source and are generally a video nerd about similar details, it will be worth the extra expenditure. Now, will it be a night and day type of difference? Of course not. It will, however, be a subtle, yet discernable, difference that makes the extra effort worth it.
The average person is better off spending the difference in cost elsewhere.
Every few decades someone figures out how to convince the industry to try it again. It failed in the '70s/'80s (remember Jaws 3D and those red/blue glasses) and now it's failing again. Big surprise.

I was reading an article from a reviewers experience at the latest CES. He commented on the almost total absence of 3D at the show.
Knew I wouldn't. It's manufacturers and producers doing what they can to make more $, that's all.
