Say 55-60" LED set. My concern is risk in handling by shippers.I'm no longer puzzled about how how an enlightened Germany was turned to embrace the Nazis

How do you think it gets to BestBuy, etc.? Just choose a reputable firm - I bought mine 2.5 years ago from Paul's, not a lick of trouble...

If the TV is both fulfilled AND sold by Amazon and it is offered with free shipping, they cover shipping costs both ways.
We bought a huge Mitsubishi 82" set last autumn with free in-home delivery and setup. It arrived in perfect condition but the picture quality was a big disappointment. Amazon paid for return shipping. No hassles at all.
To play it safe, as I did, ask Amazon about this prior to ordering. They replied to me via email.
During the holidays, for the master bedroom, we ordered a 50" Panasonic plasma from Amazon, also with free shipping and setup. It, too, arrived in perfect condition. The picture on the plasma is stunning and we kept it.
The last time I checked, Dell and Crutchfield also offered very generous TV shipping and return policies.
My 2 cents if there are shipping concerns is to avoid 'free' or 'ground' shipping at all costs. Many more hubs/transfer points than going airport to airport with 2 or 3 day shipping.
I got my Panny plasma from Amazon, no issues at all.
Tubes and vinyl are preferred.

... back in 2010. Arrived undamaged and I've been using it ever since. Just check the feedback of the dealer or deal with a name brand retailer like WalMart.

... Get the best price which must include delivery inside your home and the product fully insured. Then, approach the local dealers to give them the opportunity to price-match.
If you don’t ask you won’t know.
I believe it is particularly important when buying a large screen TV (say 60 inch +) to buy from a well-known and well-respected seller and the product must be fully insured with no nonsense terms.
Also, actually take the time to read the terms & conditions of the insurance BEFORE you make the purchase so as you are making a fully informed decision.
Good luck.EDIT; Syntax

The set was delivered by a service that specialized in flatscreen displays. They did all the unpacking and setup, which consisted only of mounting to its stand and turning on the display to see that it functioned OK. Unfortunately, the set didn't turn on; it just emitted a loud buzz, so back it went. A second set was delivered a week later by a generic delivery service, with one person instead of two as in the first time. He was adamant about delivering it only up to the front door and not inside the house. After some gentle persuasion, however, he did bring it inside and up the short flight of stairs to the living room (with my help). He even stayed to help me with unpacking it, attaching the stand, and placing it on the table. Fortunately, there were no problems with this set!

I bought two from Costco.com a few months ago. They were delivered in perfect condition but the largest was 32 inches.

Mom and dad got two from QVC, not a problem. They also got 3 mo interest free financing.

Support your local stores, but heck, you get much better service online!
Well, they were also shipped to your local store, if you buy there. Shipping is a way of life.
True, but the handling of generic residential deliveries is much different than commercial shipping and distribution. I'm just concerned about the UPS gorillas vs a $2k 60" LED set. After the fact damage resolution is a PITA.

I agree, residential shipping services are much rougher on handling packages. Hopefully because they can see that it is TV display they will not bang it around so much. I would make sure that it is insured and check the outside of the box for damage when taking delivery and then hook it up and try all the main functions as soon as you can.
Stores generally receive inventory that have multiple boxes shrink wrapped on a pallet. They are usually sent via freight and the pallet is handled only with a fork lift or pallet jack. Shipping an individual box is somewhat more risky. With that said, in the past I've ordered two 32" flat screens from Amazon and had no problems. Delivery was fine and without damage. As long as the item is fully insured and you can get an RA with free shipping and your choice of replacement or refund you should be OK.
