Just wondering. Say, I didn't want a plasma because of lighting issues. Say, I didn't want the top-rung Samsung TV because of cost. So, in general, why would I choose an LED TV over an LCD TV??
Just wondering. Happy, happy with the Panny plasma, but looking for a family room TV now.

I love my new Samsung UN46F8000 LED HDTV! Just blows me away with it's amazing PQ... :)
The LEDs will be more energy efficient, generate less heat and be razor-thin. The light is a bit different and most LEDS hav a bit of a bluish cast to the pure whites. Actually both use back lit LCD, but the traditional LCD is a fluorescent backlight rather than LED.
I expect the non-LED units will be phased out pretty much over the next year, and then buyers will only debate the merits of the various LED lighting schemes. The edge-backlit system is cheaper but traditionally not as even. The Web sites that test TV sets study this in great detail, esp the issue of whether the Edge-backlit sets are starting to catch up with the more expensive to manufacture systems.
This article is good and (thankfully) not inconsistent with what I said, above.
It was great finding out there is only one significan plasma manufacturer and just buying their TV and being satisfied -- Panasonic.
Anyway, in the store, I found myself liking the LCD panels (not too many of these even available) more than the LED panels. So, let's see, they cost less and have a better picture than the LEDs, but just use more energy. Sort of how plasma TVs are as well!
Thanks for the article reference.
The lower priced LCD panels may have looked better to you than LED panels in a store (with store lighting and no calibration), but when you start moving up in price local-dimming LED panels and edge-lite LED panels will both produce far better pictures than LCD panels.
