Hi my friends, Looking for a little help on this one. I've never been a big video guy and well my money and attention has been in the audio end of things. But here goes, I have a Sony dvd/cd player from 1999 model DVp-s550d which at the time was a lot of money. I know its dated but its like brand new and lately I been using it for playing cd's in my living room system and playing occasional concert dvds which seem to be fine. Its hooked up with component outputs to a newer hitachi 50 inch plasma tv. I've noticed that lately older dvd's like my X-files collection and some other classics seem to get occasional artifacts going across the screen..... appears to be intermittant lines.... the dvd's are clean as i keep my stuff immaculate, and I don't believe its the player cause most of my concert dvds all seem ok ( most are newer though.) I've tried different settings on the dvd which really only has tv size... using 16 by 9 and 4 by 3. At the tv end i've tried 16 by 9, zoom 1, zoom 2 and i really don't want 4 by 3 which doesn't fill the screen. Any ideas on this one I know its time for a new one but the cd player end of new stuff scares me as my system is pretty high end and i'd like to keep 1 player for both. Thanks r

Have you tried cleaning the player with a CD/DVD cleaner disc?
You mentioned trying the various aspect ratio and manipulations, I was curious if there were any changes at all in the distortions you seen? If the DVD itself is 4:3 it could be the Hatachi may not be able to scale to 16:9 as well as the Sony did.
If you have a surround receiver you could try taking the video to the receiver and see if it converts better. Some receivers don't have video upconversion though so you will need to check yours.
Also, are the problem DVD's big titles? I've had friends who have bought DVD's out of budget bins, like at Wal-Mart that had playback issues.
Are you sure they're not problems specific to that disc? I have an Eagles DTS disc which I love the sound on, but the video's terrible (and I know that). Other discs play fine. Some discs were just mastered terribly. Try playback on another player and see if the same occurs!
Yes I have cleaned it and it seems ok on newer concert DVDs I've bought. Only seems to happen on older disc's and they were ok when it was hooked up to a old sony wega xbr tv I have

its tough to tellif the problemis with the disk or the player. Some disks just dont seem to like some players
A common problem with older players is that the drive belt on the laser goes bad.
