Sorry avr 1611 is a denon receiver. For example last week game of thrones on direct tv had a scene on a ship. The rear surrounds worked great with the creaking of the ship. The side speakers had the waves and gulls and the front had the convo going, but this was one of the only times that I have heard the surround work. The side speakers still work.

Get used to that. I set my AVR to send all info to the all 4 rears when no 7.1 info is present. Haven't watched a movie since, so I am unsure if I like having 4 speakers handling the rear duty or not. I do know there are very few 7.1 movies out there.

I believe most 5.1 & 7.1 receivers have adjustments for the gain of each speaker...all that I have seen did. Also be sure you are in the right listening "mode" for all speakers to work. The are a few that are not 7.1. Time to read the users manual thoroughly. If you don't have it you can download one from the Denon site... Finally, be sure you have a digital connection to your receiver.
