Thank you for the Samsung's model number. I agree it is a bit much to buy an expensive backup primary television. My concern was prompted by Sony stating a few months ago that OLED screens had too high a defect rate in production and that the company was closing shop on the technology.

When I purchased the Panasonic plasma last autumn, I anticipated it would eventually be replaced by an OLED television, hopefully one with a 70-80"+ screen. With Sony out of the OLED picture for the foreseeable future--and potentially other manufacturers as well--I am worried that our plasma TV may have to last quite a long time. It likely will be reliable for many years, but if it fails in maybe 3-6 years and cannot be repaired...uh, oh.

When we sent back an 82" Mitsubishi DLP, we had the downsizing withdrawal symptoms, too. We found it easier to readjust after moving our seats about two feet closer to the 65" Hitachi rear-projection television we were trying to replace.

I still have the Hitachi, which works like new, but it consumes a lot of needed garage space. I might keep the Hitachi as the emergency backup TV.

I am almost at home with its smaller screen, it is becoming less of an issue quickly, as you get drawn into the picture, and I can't resist throwing different material at it! :-)

Yes, there have been conflicting storied on OLED, some actually claim that the quality levels are rising, citing the numbers like 80% or even more... but of course they still are uncertain about the longevity - which is totally important in expensive TV's.

But I am hopeful... I think 5 years is very long time by the electronic industry standards, and they should figure it out!

  How's the sound quality on that Sammy? All I can find in the specs is that it's downward firing 10w. I figured if the sound wasn't worth a poop you'dve sent it back before the Sony, but thought I'd ask. Contemplating the purchase of another TV for my wife's other home (a.k.a her mother's house) as the existing TV there is some ancient 25" CRT console. She's been hinting that she'd like me to accompany her more often when she goes up there for visits, and if I have nothing to do but watch TV while I'm there I'd at least like to have something decent. I've had some Sammy TV's in my past that had down right shitty audio ... although this being one of their flagship models I suspect they did audio properly.

    It is much worse than the Sony's. It is OK on news programs, but on films it can be a struggle - it sounds defused and not too intelligible, so I often end up using wireless headphones.
    
    If you are possibly considering a plasma, Best Buy might have the floor samples, or open box, of Samsung 51" model, it is great, and can be had for under $1500.
