Yes, your right, I could buya newer tv for peanuts. But this tv has such an amazing pic, I want to keep it.
The problem is not with the Hi-Def part, it is great.
The problem is the low-def picure, it is distorted by 5 transparent vertical bars running from top to bottom. (Ihave the service manual, and there is no mention of this problem.)
I've called Sony, they offer no help except to refer me to a repair shop. I am a technician, and I see it as a challenge to attempt repair.
I doubt anyone here knows the answer, but I wonder if there is a forum somewhere that someone might have run across it.
Thank you for any help.

I hear that my friend! Some of these sets will last 20 years.
I, too, enjoy a Sony XBR CRT HD set from 2004. I will never own any set other than a Sony CRT!
If all else fails get an AVR that has a built-in scaler? Current models don't seem to include that feature, but in the past the better models included scaler tech from the likes of Faroudja or Anchor Bay. Or, a budget outboard scaler like the iSCAN. Old receivers and scalers ought to be pretty cheap since HDMI has made them obsolete.
IIRC Sony subbed their screens out. Video wise 1999,unfortunately, represents an eternity video wise. Power supply not an issue if related to screen cost would be prohibitive. It does not sound like a screen issue though. Maybe a micro processor thing which unfortunately also go out of production.
Believe it or not YouTube is usually a great source for finding and fixing problems on many things, or at least getting a good idea of what to look for. I repaired the AC unit on my house, some mechanical wrist watches and several electronic items including a computer display using YouTube videos. Your issue is probably fixable, try searching on key words related to your problem and see what comes up.
Great idea, thanks for the idea.

Find your set, if there's not a thread on it here I doubt there's a thread anywhere.
