A few months ago my Denon AVR2312 Cie receiver began dropping out the audio or, on occasion, both the audio and the video. There is no pattern, sometimes two or three times in a five hour period, sometimes not for days, sometimes upon initial start up of the system. Booting the receiver one or multiple times will (has) restored operations. The receiver is three years old and there is no problem in connections or set-up. No heating, odors, smoke, blown fuses, or unusual sounds occur. I'm understandably reluctant to purchase a new receiver, however, as I peruse through peoples comments concerning various brands of receivers it appears to be almost a common defect related to HDMI "handshake" problems. This was insinuated to me on the Denon "Tech Help" line,
What's up with this? Does this only affect Denon/Marantz brands or is this a universal problem connected to HDMI circuitry?
Follow Ups:
Not sure how it could be handshaking if it worked fine for 3 years unless one of your HDMI sources is new. Did you update firmware on any of your HDMI devices just before it started happening or could they have been updated automatically over the internet? If so, see if you can roll back the update. If not see if there are any new firmware updates to install. Have you tried eliminating the sources by disconnecting all of them except one and running your system until you are sure it is not the culprit and then the next one and so on? If one of the sources turns out to be the problem it may be the cable. Try using a different HDMI cable from one of the good sources and also a different HDMI port(s). Also try Sat to monitor without the receiver in the chain and DVD to monitor without the receiver in the chain. Try a different monitor if you can. It could be a noise issue or a component in one of the devices getting flakey, including in the power supply.
or something is loose(like a circuit board)
The Denon Rep. suggested I "boot" the HDMI cables, leaving them disconnected for at least 15 min. then reattach and power up equipment in order (1. Monitor 2. Receiver 3. Sat. 4. DVD ). This had no effect, a dropout occurred hours later. Everything internally (to the receiver) is solid and appears as if assembled yesterday, including that unique "electronics that have never been burned or abused smell" As a troubleshooting aid, I've ordered a complete set of new HDMI cables. I know I am not the only victim of this malfunction... it's just so elusive ...
