I've always been curious about projectors that have lost sooo much of their value.
Are these deals as good as they seem or am I missing something big, like not being able to replace super expensive bulbs or outdated formats, etc.

Here's another one; in 2003 it sold for $26,000... today $1500.
Do you think it would be hard to beat with a modern $1500 projector?
And then there is the mentioned maintenance issues.
your local repair facility. If you don't have a local repair facility then I would steer clear of it.
It's like buying a $10,000 Ferrari. There is no such thing as a $10,000 Ferrari.
I bought a Panasonic projector in 2006 for about $2K that had similar specs, a native 1280x720 resolution. Bulbs were a couple hundred or so. The picture was stunning on a 132" Stewart screen which cost 3x of the projector cost.
A good, new true HD projector can likely be bought for slightly more than that one with a new bulb. All you need is one HDMI input, the BNCs and RGB inputs are a complete waste and just cost more money. With 70" HDTVs at their current prices, projectors aren't worth much and unless you plan on a top notch BIG screen for it in a dark room, it's just not worth it, which isn't to say that it's not incredible at night for a movie.

Here is another take - I recently bought a BenQ HT1075 projector for $800 and an 120" Elite Screen for about $400. I'm extremely impressed with what $1,200 can buy these days. It makes my older 50" Panasonic plasma look like a toy. I must admit however that I did paint my walls and ceiling in Ben Moore Charcoal Gray and covered my 3 skylights so the room can be made completely dark!
