Some great performances are unavailable on CD, but available on DVD. But how good is the sound?
Follow Ups:
...yes, to some degree, but not always egregiously o. I have some very good sounding opera DVDs, even including "pirates" from sellers like Premiere Opera that are downloads burned to disc. My opera/classical DVDs overall range from good to very good. I prefer my operas/concerts on blu-ray for both sound and picture, but some performances can only be found on DVD. Considering how few new recordings of opera are being produced, the blu-rays and DVDs are a blessing. Plus, you get to see some terrific stage productions.
DVD sound codecs are all lossy. But the sound can be pretty good... Depends on the source material.
BluRay discs can have lossless compression.
