I am sorry, but have not posted here in a long time. I am a novice.
But I need to transfer some video 8 and hi 8 material to digital, so that we can time mark and cut and paste.
How would you folks do this?
I know that possibly, transfer all videos unedited to a digital format (what's best, DVD, USB memory, SD type card?)?
Follow Ups:
I bought a combo VCR / DVD burner from JVC a few years back for under $200 (a lot less than paying someone to do it!!). It has an ADC input and digital output. Converted all my old VHS and hi 8 video tape to DVD. Painless. Later on, I got a Blu Ray burner and transferred the files over.
There are services that will do this, the basic output being made to a flash drive. Video format not specified, but probably MPEG-4. For extra money, you can get DVDs, which I would not recommend because optical disc players of all types seem to be on the way out.
There's also a device that does this, accepting your analog video and analog output and connecting via USB to a computer (Windows or MacOS, doesn't matter). I believe this generates an MPEG-4 output, which is editable by most video editing software, such as iMovie, that comes bundled with a Mac. The output can be moved around like any other computer file, from internal disc drive, flash drive, optical disc, etc.

Bought a "Potplayer" and when I try the video, reads no input or something. It copies some digital pics and videos that are already stored on my desktop, so I know something works.
