Don't know much about Video at all... I have used an attic antenna for over 20 years.. Never used Cable. I am thinking I would like a DVR to record programs OTA .... What is the Best Bang for the Buck out there? --- And let me know also what the Best is.... Don't want to spend over $500.
How about an ATSC tuner card (or USB dongle) in a PC (or laptop)? I've found a few under $10 at thrift stores and a computer recycler, but admittedly I've yet to persuade one to actually receive an over-the-air signal (need a better antenna?). Hauppauge's Wintv HVR models are common; their software leaves a lot to be desired, but they should be well-supported by other PVR apps. It should be possible to load a PC with multiple tuners and simultaneously record from more than one station.
Back when I had satellite TV, I mostly used Beyond TV or SageTV Recorder with a WinTV analog capture card, but I heard good things about MythTV.
I use them with a cable card, but they also have OTA versions with a built in DVR function.
In my case, it works with Windows Media Player and an add on, MCEBuddy, can post-process the files and strip commercials. Plex will then allow you to put the files on your NAS and play them on any TV in the house.
So, it looks like to record TV it's a $35 a month Subscription?
That's the cost because you can't record series if you don't know when they're on.
My setup is different because I use different HDHomeRun devices with cable cards, giving me 6 tuners. This all works with Windows Media Server, so I'm not familiar with the OTA setup.
Silicon Dust offers a DVR service, but you don't need it as Plex can do it all including linking to the HDHomeRun box and striping commercials or so they say. You should be able to run the Plex server on your NAS and nearly any client like Roku, Apple TV etc., to view the programs on your TV.
My experience is that Plex is more solid and using Roku boxes, it's fast and stable. Silicon Dust has been a bit slow getting their software done and DRM is a problem which is why I use WMC and Xboxes to get around those issues. DRM is not an issue for OTA, only for most cable stations as a few are not encrypted
